Writing Skills | CBSE Class 9

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the National Curriculum Framework for Secondary Education (NCF-SE 2023), the updated CBSE syllabus primarily focuses on competency-based learning. Writing skills play an immense role in effective communication and help students develop their competencies. The topics featured in the Writing Skills section provide students with an opportunity to express their opinions and viewpoints in an effective manner using precise vocabulary, correct grammar, and proper sentence organisation. These topics also enhance their creative thinking and equip them with the skills required to write for real-life purposes. As per the latest CBSE Class 9 English syllabus, the Writing Skills section carries a total weightage of 20 marks and includes the following topics:
1. Notice Writing or Informal Invitation 
An internal choice will be provided for this question. You may choose to draft either a notice or an informal invitation, in about 50 words. This question carries 3 marks.
2. Letter to the Editor or Formal E-mail 
This question also features an internal choice. You may choose to write either a letter to the editor or a formal e-mail, in 120-150 words. This question carries 5 marks.
3. Factual Description or Magazine Article
This question carries 5 marks and offers a choice to write either a factual description or a magazine article. The required word limit is 120-150 words.
4. Descriptive Essay or Narrative Essay
A choice between a descriptive essay and a narrative essay will be provided for this question. The required word limit is 200-250 words. The question carries 7 marks.
